Collection: Bodegas de Producción

Bodegas de Producción are wine houses that grow grapes and make must, the white base wine that is turned into sherry. They then sell the must to bodegas which turn the wine into sherry, known as almacenistas, or to Bodegas de Crianza y Exportación, the houses that make sherry and are authorised to sell it on the export market.

A Bodega de Producción is also allowed to sell its own wines and sherries directly. Although they fall under the protection of the Consejo Regulador of Jerez, they are not marketed as D.O. wine. For the last few years they have been allowed to use the name of Jerez wines, like Amontillado, Oloroso, etc. ...

The majority of Bodegas de Producción can be found in the Sherry Triangle: in Rota, Trebujena, Chiclana, Chipiona, … They are a fundamental part of the organisation of the wine region around Jerez de la Frontera. To understand this better, it is useful to know a bit of history: the sale of grapes for wine in Jerez never brought in much money. In the twentieth century, planting and maintaining vineyards became less and less profitable. To such an extent that many Bodegas de Crianza y Exportación sold their vineyards, as well as the installations for making base wine (the must). Meantime, fewer than 30% of the export bodegas continued to work with their own grapes. Most of the grapes are grown by the region's cooperatives. There are still a few independent grape growers.
