Collection: Casa Castillo
'Propriedad Viticola Casa Castillo' was built in 1870 by French immigrants, winemakers fleeing Phylloxera (the grape aphid). Not only native grape varieties (Monastrell first and foremost) but also more 'international' varieties (Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon) were planted. In 1941, winemaking was briefly put aside for rosemary.
Later, in the 1980s, the second generation of the Vincente family undertook a big project to restore viticulture once more. Grandson José María is the current boss. Meanwhile, Casa Castillo has become a true reference for Monastrell in Jumilla and by extension in all of Spain.
The region is called El Altiplano de Jumilla and enjoys a continental climate that is somewhat moderated by the proximity of the Mediterranean Sea. The vineyards are mostly located on the steep slopes of La Sierra del Molar. Of course, the main grape is Monastrell. Garnacha and Syrah are also grown on some plots in the right places.
Casa Castillo does everything it can to cultivate finesse in the harsh climate of the region. All the grapes have to be picked by hand. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel cuves and in underground concrete tanks. In order to retain enough freshness, more and more whole (i.e. not destemmed) bunches are macerated. The wines are aged in 5,000 litre concrete foudres, and in French oak, 500 litre barrels.
All the wines have been certified organic since 2019.
