Collection: Celler Martin Faixo
D.O. Emporda: This D.O. is located in the far northeast of Catalonia, just over the French border. This area is conditioned by the Tramontana wind and its proximity to the sea. The winters are mild and the summers temperate. The subsoil consists primarily of poor granite. The "native" grape is Garnacha, which is often planted in combination with classic French grape varieties.
Winegrowers and winemakers in the vineyards of Ampurdán – called Empordà in Catalan – have focused their attention on healthier vines and new fermentation technologies. As a result, this area promises to become a producer of high-quality wines.
Although this area used to have a lot of cooperatives, small family bodegas are increasingly popping up, often run by young oenologists. They are also updating winemaking techniques.
The area was formerly specialised in sweet, unfortified wines, like just over the border in France, but nowadays the bodegas are getting increasing recognition for their modern, young red wines.
