Collection: Costers del Priorat
Costers del Priorat is a project with a heart and goal. It was established in 2002 by Enric Solé, Pau Urgell, Josep Massana, Marc Massana and Josep Ramon Sedó. They were all thoroughly experienced winegrowers and entrepreneurs. In 2008, they added internationally renowned winemaker Josep Mas to their ranks. Their aim: making good wine by pursuing the right balance of old winemaking traditions and the harsh land of Priorat.
They aim for elegant, fine wines and not just the concentrated boldness for which the region is usually known. The vines are grown on three plots at the heart of the region: Sant Martí, Mas Alsera and Les Solanes, in the villages Bellmunt, Torroja and El Molar. The bodega itself is in El Molar, on the plot of Les Solanes.
The name Costers comes from the steep hillsides reinforced with earthen walls on which the old vines are planted. The iconic image of the region. Cariñena (known locally as Samsó) and Garnacha on Llicorella, the typical slate soil. It's a poor soil that cannot retain water. The yields per hectare are also very low: five hectolitres per hectare, whereas the Spanish average is somewhere between 25 and 30 hectolitres. This is also exceptionally low in comparison with the yields in countries like France or Italy. But as is often the case, the very particular soil really determines the character and quality of the wines.
