Collection: D.O. Bizkaiko Txakolina

This D.O. is one of the three wine areas in the Basque Country where Txakoli is made. The region itself is around Bilbao, with vineyards along the coast, in the valleys and on the mountain slopes. This area has undergone extensive urban and industrial development and both agriculture and winegrowing have had to fight to survive. Txakoli is one of the traditional products here, and plays a strong economic, as well as a social role. And it has been that way for centuries. Most of the wines are not 'exported' to the rest of Spain or abroad but are drunk by the Basques themselves ...

The D.O. was not established until 1994. They set themselves the goal of promoting and protecting these unique 'Atlantic' wines from local grape varieties, in all their authenticity.

The greater part of the production is white wine from the Basque Hondarabbi Zuri grape. Other grapes include, for example, the Mune Mahatsa and the Zuri Zerratia. Red wines are made from Hondarrabi Beltza.

The climate is mild and Atlantic. The temperatures are mild throughout the year. Summers are relatively cool, which allows the grapes to ripen slowly. They are usually only harvested in October. Most of the vineyards are located on southern facing slopes, protected from the north wind. There is adequate sunshine and most rainfall occurs in the winter and spring (1,000 mm - 1,300 mm). The frequent, warm south wind in the spring is noteworthy.
