Collection: D.O.P. Cebreros
Cebreros was only recognized as a D.O.P. (Denominación de Origen Protegida) in 2019. The appellation itself is still relatively unknown, but the combination of old garnacha vines, granite soils, a mountain climate and some dynamic winemakers make it one of the world's most promising wine regions.
Location and viticulture
D.O.P. Cebreros is part of Sierra de Gredos, a mountain range situated northwest of Madrid. The name of that mountain range is also the name for the 'umbrella' wine region of which Cebreros is part. Within that area, Cebreros forms the transition from North to South. It is a rough, wild country where wine was made as early as the thirteenth century. A wines that was very popular in Madrid and Ávila. At the end of the nineteenth / early twentieth century, rather heavy, alcoholic wines were produced, used to 'pimp' other blends. Phylloxera came late in Cebreros and caused fewer losses than in other Spanish wine regions. So in the 1970s, winegrowing quickly recovered. The area was named Vino de la Tierra and, with the energy, knowledge and ideas of a new generation of winemakers, this young D.O.P. aims to consolidate itself as one of the best and most promising representatives of the red garnacha and the white albillo real.
Today...
... well-considered oenology has taken the lead. There are many new projects with old vineyards and the region breaths an open atmosphere where a co-operative can stand next to a small winery and biodynamic winemakers work in harmony with more traditional ones. The D.O.P. is very active and approaches the organization of the appellation in the Burgundy way: from regional wines to village wines, over single vineyards to single parcel wines: respect for quality and origin!
Terroir
The climate in Cebreros is warmer than in the surrounding area. It rains a little less. The high-altitude vineyards mainly consist of granite soils. This makes tannins finer, softer, the fruit riper, wines more complex, structured, with sufficient acidity. The local differences make the region unusually fascinating, but in general you might assert that the garnacha wines show a lot of refinement, with a remarkable minerality.
