Collection: Dominio de Atauta
The region of Soria contains the isolated Atauta Valley. From a winemaker's standpoint this valley is a real ethnographical gem. You can find pre-Phyloxerra vines and a unique, old Tempranillo clone (locally: Tinto Fino) there. Atauta is located 50 km from the source of the Duero, thus entirely on the east of D.O. Ribera del Duero.
It has harsh, cold winters and short, hot summers. There is little rainfall and a strong westward wind blows continually. The vineyards are located at above 1,000 metres altitude. The soil varies from plot to plot, but it is chalky everywhere. All these factors ensure perfectly ripened grapes with complex aromas and tannins and a very typical minerality.
Dominio de Atauta was founded a good ten years ago to make wine reflecting the unique character of the old vineyards. All the vines are at least 85 years old and some are over 150-year-old pre-Phyloxerra vines. The bodega is built on a rock, four stories high. The whole building was constructed in such a way that the winemaker, Almudera Alberca, would be able to make use gravity during vinification. This prevents damage to the grapes during the process. The area is subdivided into 400 micro-plots, each of which is individually managed to maintain the best of its characteristics. Jaime Suárez took over the wine label from Almudena a few years ago.
