Collection: Fillaboa
Galicia immediately evokes an association with a rich and varied catch, and perhaps above all with shellfish. As is often the case, the local wine goes perfectly with the local cuisine. Grape variety number one in Galicia is its very own Albariño. Rias Baixas wines are dry white wines with a light, saline note. The vineyards of Bodegas Fillaboa lie only a few kilometres inland from the coast.
The Fillaboa estate is south facing, just above the border with Portugal. The reputation of Fillaboa wines is one of top quality. It was with good reason that Fillaboa Joven 2003 was chosen as the white wine for the wedding reception of Prince Felipe and Letizia Ortiz. Selección Monte Alto 2003 was chosen as the best white wine of the year 2005 by the Spanish wine press.
Fillaboa, together with Murua from Rioja and Pagos de Araiz from Navarra, forms part of the Corporación Masaveu, one of Spain's larger building materials conglomerates. But contrary to what sadly all too often happens, the Masaveu family wants to maintain their wines' individuality.
They are mindful to make the right investments in materials and sound infrastructure - you really should visit the bodegas if you are in the area, because they are gems, culturally too - and they also encourage the original winemakers to deepen their knowledge and inspiration and therefore continue to make fabulous wines. The Fillaboa estate is south facing, just above the border with Portugal.
