Collection: D.O. Jumilla

Jumilla is an old wine region extending across the Provinces of Murcia and Albacete. The region has long been known for its 'doble pasta' wine, which uses extra fruit pulp to strengthen table wine. Jumilla was long spared the grape aphid, Phylloxera, and there are some non-grafted vines there to this this day (called pie franco). When Phylloxera finally reached the area, it was as ruthless as ever. However, the replanting of the decimated vineyards led to a complete rethink of winemaking philosophy. The result can now be experienced in the bottle as high quality and well-regarded wines.

The Jumilla climate is continental, with hot summers (temperatures over 40°C) and cold winters. There is limited rainfall and temperature fluctuations in the between-seasons can be very great indeed. The vineyards are located in the sierras, at altitudes of 400 to 850 metres. The soil is limestone with a dry, rusty-brown earth top layer. The grape that thrives best here is Monastrell (85% of the total vines). Monastrell is a somewhat under-appreciated grape with a relatively high sugar content, but with enough acidity, providing that the grape is picked on time. In the hands of a skilled winemaker this grape can be turned into wonderful wines. Other permitted varieties are Syrah, Garnacha, Tempranillo, Cabernet and Merlot. When it comes to white grapes, the varieties are Macabeo, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and the sweeter grapes Moscatel, Pedro Ximénez and Malvasia.
