Collection: D.O. Ribeiro
Ribeiro is located in the Province of Ourense, near the Miño river which further inland forms the Spanish-Portuguese border.
The vineyards are located in the same province, mostly in the valleys of the Miño, the Avia and the Arnoya. They are laid out in terrace form, in sandy, alluvial soil with a granite subsoil, typical of this part of Spain. Ribeiro is located inland, somewhat away from the Atlantic Ocean and it has a temperate climate. The Miño is affected by winds from Portugal, so the humidity here is fairly high and it is slightly cooler than in the neighbouring D.O.. In summer the temperature rises to 36°C, and in the winter it can freeze to -4°C. The annual average is 15°C; rainfall averages 800 to 1,000 mm; and the sun shines for 1,800 hours a year.
The most important grape is without a doubt Treixadura. Under the influence of Vinitocola de Ribeiro (see the Costiera wines) the region has emerged from the scourge of mass production and now makes good wines from this grape, often mixed with other Galician grapes like Albariño, Loureira, Torrontés and even Godello from Bierzo.
