Collection: Dehesa Del Carrizal
Dehesa del Carrizal is located in the middle of Montes de Toledo, near the Cabañeros National Park, 150 km southwest of Madrid.
Dehesa is a Vino de Pago, a D.O. in its own right. The Spanish wine laws grant this title to bodegas which manage the entire process from grape to bottle within the boundaries of the pago (wine estate), and they have a reputation for making high quality wines. Naturally, this also means that individual and strict rules apply to the making of each wine.
The first grape grown at this pago was Cabernet Sauvignon. That was in 1987. Since then, more varieties have been planted: Syrah, Merlot, Tempranillo, Chardonnay and Petit Verdot.
Montes de Toledo is a small area that forms part of the huge La Mancha, the largest wine region in the world with more than 200,000 hectares of vineyard. Unfortunately, the wines made here are not the most exciting, although there has been a clear shift towards greater quality and less quantity over the last few years.
There are various small bodegas in Montes de Toledo that work outside the D.O. status. But make wonderful wines on their own steam and according to their own standards. Dehesa Del Carrizal is a case in point and has meanwhile acquired the status of Vino de Pago.
