Collection: Doniene Gorrondona
The bodega is located in Bakio, north of Bilbao, the birthplace of Txakoli. It was a small family business that transformed from a traditional farming business to a modern winery. There was already some kind of winery here in 1851, but the real change came only in 1994, when four friends - Itziar Inausti (oenologist and winemaker), Julen Frías (agronomist), Egoitz Inausti (Itziar's brother who manages the vineyards with Julen) and Andoni Sarratea (journalist and wine fanatic) took control and made a deliberate choice for professionalism. The focus turned exclusively to wine. In the same year, they also helped found D.O. Bizkaiko Txakolina. Doniene Gorrondona also has its own distillery with copper stills.
The area where Doniene is located has a particular climate: close to the Atlantic Ocean but protected by the mountains which close the valley to the west. The vineyards are located on south and southwest facing slopes. The soils vary greatly and provide the ability to make wines with very distinctive personalities. The temperatures are moderate throughout the year, the growing cycle is long, and the harvest period typically falls sometime in October.
The bodega is continually updating and experimenting. They trial new grape varieties, experiment with alternative methods of making wine, consciously aim for low yields and use very few added sulphites for a region that is so northern and humid by Spanish standards ... Meantime, they have become one of the standard-bearers of a new generation of winegrowers in the Basque Country and their wines are striking examples of the quality that Txakoli can achieve.
- de focus is on terroir
- since 2011, they have exclusively used autochthonous yeasts from their own vineyards, making the wines even more terroir-driven.
- only native grape varieties and no international ones
- the vineyards are processed organically. Sulphite usage is kept as low as possible. This is particularly remarkable for a region where it rains regularly. One of their wines - Iri - is even made without sulphite.
- Itziar makes pure, elegant wines, which belong among the most authentic of the region.
